The upcoming edition of the Copa America, the South American continent’s football tournament, will be held in the United States.
A total of 16 teams will participate in the tournament, 10 teams from South America and 6 teams from North and Central America will compete.
Although it is Ecuador’s turn to host the 2024 Copa America, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has given permission to the United States to host the tournament after its government said it could not host it.
The Copa America is going to be held outside South America for the second time.
Previously, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Copa America, this tournament was also held in America in 2016.
Argentina won the last Copa America title in 2021 in Brazil.
CONMEBOL and North and Central American Football Confederation CONCACAF have also reached various agreements for organizing women’s football and club competitions along with the 2024 Copa America.
According to which the number of teams will be increased to 16 in the upcoming Copa America.
In which South American 10 teams will be selected automatically and 6 teams will be from CONCACAF.
The team will be finalized in the 2023-24 CONCACAF Nations League.
Despite being the hosts, the USA will not automatically qualify, having recently lost to the Netherlands in the last 16 of the Qatar World Cup.
America will host the World Cup in 2026 along with Mexico.
Similarly, according to the strategic partnership between the football associations of the two continents, there will be 4 invited teams from CONMEBOL in the 2024 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup.
A total of 12 teams will compete in this. Similarly, a new four-team club competition will be held in 2024, including 2 teams each from both continents.
