Introduction:

The Israel-Palestine conflict is a deeply entrenched and multifaceted struggle that has spanned over a century. It has resulted in immense human suffering, loss of life, and displacement. To understand the current tension, we must delve into its historical roots.

The Balfour Declaration: Seeds of Conflict

More than 100 years ago, on November 2, 1917, Britain’s then-foreign secretary, Arthur Balfour, penned a 67-word letter addressed to Lionel Walter Rothschild, a prominent figure in the British Jewish community. This seemingly innocuous letter, known as the Balfour Declaration, had far-reaching consequences for Palestine.

In those few lines, Britain committed to “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” and pledged to facilitate this objective. However, the catch lay in the demographics: Palestinian Arabs constituted over 90 percent of the population. Essentially, a European power promised land to the Zionist movement, disregarding the majority native population.

The British Mandate and Shifting Demographics

Following the Balfour Declaration, a British Mandate was established in 1923, lasting until 1948. During this period, the British facilitated mass Jewish immigration, with many fleeing Nazism in Europe. Simultaneously, Palestinians witnessed their country’s changing demographics and the confiscation of their lands for Jewish settlers.

The Creation of Israel and Ongoing Conflict

In 1948, Israel declared its independence, leading to a war with neighboring Arab states. The Nakba, or “catastrophe,” occurred as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced from their homes. Israel eventually occupied the West Bank and Gaza, leading to two Palestinian uprisings marked by suicide attacks, bombings, and human rights abuses.

The Gaza Strip: A Flashpoint

The Gaza Strip, a narrow coastal enclave, has been a focal point of conflict. Hamas, an armed Palestinian group, controls Gaza. It refuses to recognize Israel as a country and seeks the return of Palestinians to their original homes. In response, Israel has imposed a blockade, controlling borders and restricting movement in and out of Gaza123.
