Russian President Vladimir Putin has admitted that his “special military operation” in Ukraine has taken longer than expected,
saying he has succeeded in seizing new territory and that his country’s nuclear weapons have prevented the conflict from escalating.
“Of course, it could be a long process,” Putin said.
The more than nine-month war, which began with a Russian invasion on February 24, has displaced millions from their homes and left tens of thousands dead or injured.
He claimed that he had no choice but to send troops and said that for years the West had ignored Russia’s security demands.
Speaking in a televised meeting with members of his Human Rights Council in Russia, Putin described the land acquisition as an “important result for Russia”.
Putin rejected Western criticism, claiming that his earlier comments on nuclear weapons were “not a factor in escalating conflict, but a factor of deterrence”.
“We are not crazy. We are fully aware of what nuclear weapons are,” Putin said.
“We have them and they are more advanced and sophisticated than any other nuclear power.”
In his televised remarks, he admitted that there were problems with supplies, treatment of wounded soldiers.
On that occasion, Putin discussed the mobilization of 300,000 reserve forces ordered in September to strengthen the army in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday that he would continue attacks on Ukrainian energy systems.
This step of Russia is being criticized worldwide. As winter approaches, millions of people are left without electricity and water.
There is a lot of talk about our strike on the energy infrastructure of neighboring countries. Yes, we do.
“But who started it?” Putin said at an awards ceremony in the Kremlin. “Criticism does not interfere with our campaign.”
